Matthew Parris...what more is there to say
For a Tory..... I kind of liked Matthew Parris. As a young Thatcherite MP I seem to remember he took up the challenge of living on benefit for a week and realising that it was not possible started distancing himself from his party....

His casual outing of Peter Mandelson on Newsnight was one of those 'I remember where I was moments on TV'...... so despite his subsequent apology for his original column his casual, throw away remarks at the start of his anticycling rant displays the underlying gut behaviour that fuels similar homo-phobic or racist rants. True we have a choice to ride bikes but incitement to murder is still a crime in this country and that is what it amounted to. 'Sorry' doesn't really cut it.

During the 5 years this site has been going we have had 3 garottings reported and others unposted, one in which serious injury was sustained. Given we post a tiny microcosm of actual anti cycling behaviour it suggests Mr Parris will have his friends.

If The Times management refuse to take the necessary action against Matthew Parris, I believe we should start a boycott of those companies who advertise in that paper. If companies were warned off advertising in The Times, that would hit the paper harder than any written complaints.

It is in particularly bad taste given the recent events in Milton Keynes (see http://www.citycycling.co.uk/issue30/issue30page7.html)
